WOODTURNING COURSES

These courses are aimed both at those who are just starting wood turning, and those with experience looking to specialise and turn more advanced projects

Course Overview

• Why choose this course?
These 2 day practical wood turning courses, delivered by Chris Eagles, are designed for both those who are new to wood turning as well as those with more experience looking for an intermediate course to impove or enhance their existing skills.  Both courses have an emphasis on a sound understanding and operation of lathes with the correct selection and use of woodturning hand tools.

Beginners will be able to turn and finish an item such as chair/stool leg(s), a sweet bowl or dried grasses vase. Those who show more aptitude would make a turned box.

Intermediate students can specialise in more advanced turned projects such as turning furniture parts inlcuding knobs and handles, chair legs and finials, fluting (with a router), Barley twists, woodturned boxes, screw thread cutting, Treen and artistic and classic one-off commissions.

Time is allocated for discussion on tools, chucks and accessories, with advice on the selection of lathes and associated equipment.  All equipment and accessories are provided, however students will gain valuable skills and experience from using their own tools if they prefer; a basic set of beginners’ woodturning tools consists of ¾” roughing gouge, 3/8” spindle gouge, ¼” beading and parting tool, ¾” rectangular skew chisel and a 3/8” deep fluted bowl gouge.

Beginners
Two-day courses are divided into four disciplines:
o Tool identification, preparation and use

Intermediate Students

o Fluting (with a router)

• What will I achieve?
Beginners will receive a thorough grounding in the safe and practical use of wood turning lathes and tool selection, plus you will be able to turn, finish and take away an item such as chair/stool leg(s), a sweet bowl or dried grasses vase.

Intermediate students will turn more advanced projects such as chair legs and other furniture parts, fluting, Barley twists and one-off commissions.
