Course Overview
• Why choose this course?
This intensive course has been designed by Peter, as part of a pair of courses, and is aimed at those who have taken our Beginner Course or have a good understanding of basic skills and are practised at tool care and sharpening.
During the course you will make an elegant table using traditional hand joints and will have the opportunity to use basic wood machines. The table will be made from fine textured Cherry, mortise and tenoned, with tapered legs.
Whilst making the table, you will learn the following skills; selection and use of solid timber, accurate marking, joint cutting, gluing, cramping and sanding. The use of buttons to allow for timber movement. The top of the table will be router moulded and the table will be cleaned up and finished, with a durable oil based finish on the top and a French polish based finish on the under frame.
You should bring your existing tools which should be sharp and ready to use; please note that this intensive course does not allow time for tool sharpening and tuning. You will be given practical demonstrations and shown the quick and professional methods used to produce quality furniture. During the week, Peter will assist and guide students, and he will endeavour to help with any particular problems you have been encountering in your own workshop. Impartial advice will be given on tool selection and buying.
• What will I achieve?
At the end of this course you will take away your own hand-crafted piece of fine furniture, and will have gained the knowledge, experience and confidence to attempt more advanced furniture making projects.
